Hydroseed/Grass Seed Care Instructions
Proper care during the first few weeks is essential for successful germination and a healthy lawn.
Watering
- Days 1–14: Keep the seeded area consistently moist. Water 2–4 times per day for 5–15 minutes each time, depending on weather, soil conditions, and sprinkler coverage. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out.
- After Germination (Weeks 3–4): Reduce watering frequency to once daily, but water longer so moisture reaches deeper into the soil.
- After 4–6 Weeks: Transition to 2–3 deep waterings per week, applying about 1 inch of water per week, including rainfall.
Mowing
- Wait until the grass reaches 3–4 inches in height before the first mowing.
- Never remove more than one-third of the grass blade in a single mowing.
- Ensure mower blades are sharp to avoid pulling out young grass.
Traffic
- Keep foot traffic, pets, and vehicles off the newly seeded area until the lawn is well established (typically 4–6 weeks).
Fertilization
- If a starter fertilizer was applied during seeding, wait 4–6 weeks before applying additional fertilizer unless otherwise directed.
- Use a fertilizer appropriate for newly established lawns.
Weed Control
- Do not apply weed control products until the new grass has been mowed at least 3–4 times, unless the product is specifically labeled as safe for newly seeded lawns.
General Tips
- Avoid overwatering, which can cause seed washout, disease, or poor root development.
- Areas where seed has washed away will require reseeding as needed.
- Weather conditions may require adjustments to the watering schedule. During hot, dry, or windy weather, additional watering may be necessary to keep the soil consistently moist.
Following these guidelines will help promote strong germination, deep root growth, and the establishment of a healthy, durable lawn.
